Shipping is the most popular method of transporting goods today, with around 90 percent of all freight now being transported by different types of vessels across the world’s oceans and through man-made waterways.
The main benefit of waterborne transportation is that large quantities of freight can be safely stored and moved in one go; this is made even easier by containerization. When transporting a large amount of goods over long distances, moving them in bulk is the only viable and cost effective way to operate. Although transit time in shipping can be considerably longer, road and air transportation are both far more limited by constraints of space and weight.
There are also other problems, such as growing congestion on roads and highways and the high cost of air travel. Rather than being seen as a threat to other modes of transport, shipping can be used within the transport chain to enhance and support other modes and in doing so, benefit all parties involved.
To meet and sustain this increase in the movement of world trade, the shipping industry has been developing steadily over recent years.
